Del Ray Artisans Opening Friday 4-Mar-2011
Picture
This is going o be a fantastic show!   Del Ray Artisans in Alexandria has put together a bumper crop of exciting abstract art.  You don't want to miss this one.  From smaller encaustic and acrylic pieces to large acrylic figure paintings, even some abstract photography teat will blow your mind.  Here's a pic of some of the art being hung.  This is just one small corner of the gallery.  There is lots more to see than this and much better in person than my cheapo camera can show.  Shop opens Friday 4-Mar-11 at &PM to 10 PM.  Runs thru 27-MAr-11.  Rumor has it that wine and treats are going to be provided to the art lovers who come in.  This is a great chance to get original local art for your home at reasonable prices.  A show this good doesn't come long every day, so don't miss it!  :-)

Del Ray Artisans gallery is located near the intersection of Mount Vernon and Commonwealth Avenues in the Colasanto Center—a white building between the City swimming pool and the elementary school playground.

Action Painting Tater Art
Picture
Action painting is more random than much other art.  The process is takes center stage and directly affects the resulting art.  I like action painting methods where the randomness of nature has a major influence on the art.  If you'd like to try your hand at a little action painting, you might enjoy tater art.  Take a look at he Art projects tab for ideas on how to do it.

I have 4 works in the Feb-2001 Abstract Art show at MOCA DC.  The show opened Friday night and was a great time.  Quite a few people stopped in and hung around to enjoy the art and atmosphere.  The gallery next door (Parish art) was also having an opening so that was an nice extra.

Parish Gallery Proudly Presents
Anacostia River School of Photography Revealing the Treasures of the East Photographers -
Bruce McNeil, Zandra Chestnut, David Harris, Melanin Douglass, Marlon Norman, and James Holiday

They have a photography show of scenes around the Annacsotia Riverfront area in East DC.  Some real interesting photos too.  Well worth taking a look at them.

The MOCA abstract show includes a variety of styles.  Pure abstracts and representational abstracts both.  Also some spray art from Kevin (Jazi).

The show is running for the next 3 weeks at MOCA DC.  I have 4 pieces in the show, 1 new 3-D piece titled Un-bubbles, another recent 3-D piece titled Pre-D2, and 2 others, Morning Birds and Broken Path 1.  Here are a few pics from the opening on Flickr:

Well, it doesn't hurt to have  map if you are trying to find something.  So here is a link to a Google map of the Art DC Gallery location in Hyattsville, MD.  The ArtDc Gallery is located in the heart of the Hyattsville arts District.  The design Studio Gallery is right next door, and across the street a new Busboys and poets is being built soon.  Right down the road is Zimstone Gallery, and not much further is the GAC Gallery and 39th Street Studios.  Washington Glass School is nearby, and also the Red Dirt Pottery studios.  There are also artist studios in the EZ storage building front and back sides.

The ArtDc auction is this Saturday and the Zimstone Wrap and Go starts at noon.  Design Studio Gallery is open for a holiday sale also.  See post below for more info.

The Dc Artdvia blog lists a couple other art events where you can get some holiday shopping done the same day as the auction.  ZimeStone Glalery and Design Studio Gallery are both open and have holiday art gifts:

This is a new encaustic titled PRE-D2.  It is 12x12 inches on a hardboard cradeled panel.  This one actually looks better in person than on the web!  The surface appears to bulge in and out at various points.  This is the 2nd abstract I've done since my doc told me I might be pre-diabetic, hence the name, PRE-D2.   A little pigment, some beeswax, some damar resin, some shellac and a bit of fire to meld things into a whole.  The orange layer is the shellac which came out as a very lacy looking layer on this one.  I think  the 3-D affect is lost on the web, but it is fairly obvious in real life.

OK, what's hot in art this weekend?

The SuddenSpace show is ongoing with open hours this weekend Saturday and Sunday 1000 AM to 7 PM. The show is in an empty building at 2301 Columbia Pike in Arlington.  Park on the side streets and walk on down.  The entrance is on the Columbia Pike street side.

And coming soon:

Here is a pic of a new encaustic I did that will be in the ArtDC benefit auction soon.  It is 12x12 on a cradeled panel.  The auction benefits the ArDc gallery.  ArtDc Gallery is the place to go to see work from new and emerging artists in D.C.  The auction is no reserve price (except for a few pieces) so it is a great chance to get some quality art.

Spent Saturday afternoon at the National Mall for the March for Fear/Rally to Restore Sanity.  Did a little sketching, although I didn't meet up with the DC Sketchcrawl group.  The Mall was packed.  Lots of fun just reading the various cause signs the protesters were carrying.  One guy was protesting lactose intolerance, and a woman had a sign that said "Stop the Screaming"  with Edward Munch's Scream image on it.  I saw protester in a banana suit, 4 singing and dancing robots, a legalize pot protester, muliple tree roosting protesters, and some tea pot signs.  Great, fun atmosphere among the crowd too.

Saturday night I went to the Ofrenda Day of the Dead festival in Old Town Alexandria.  Listened to music by a the Hootenannys live band at the Torpedoe Factory and wandered around with some wine enjoying the artist studios.  Then watched the fesitval parade as it ended up in the Torpedoe Factory.  Cost me all of $2 for parking in the city parking garage under Market square too.
